Miracle Baby Born Twice in Ten Weeks

When Keri McCartney was 6-months pregnant, doctors discovered a large tumor growing from her unborn baby’s tailbone. Though the growth was non-cancerous, it was full of blood vessels and as big as the fetus itself, presenting a deadly threat.

In February, doctors at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston removed the fetus from McCartney’s uterus, took out the tumor and then returned the fetus. Ten weeks later, on May 3, Macie Hope McCartney was born again. Read The Full Story

Ectopic Pregnancy Miracle

A very small percentage of women will suffer from an ectopic pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy is defined as: development of a fertilized egg elsewhere than in the uterus (as in a fallopian tube or the peritoneal cavity)

According to WebMD,

There is no way to save an ectopic pregnancy. It cannot turn into a normal pregnancy. If the egg keeps growing in the fallopian tube, it can damage or burst the tube and cause heavy bleeding that could be deadly. If you have an ectopic pregnancy, you will need quick treatment to end it before it causes dangerous problems.

In a very rare case, doctors missed the opportunity to diagnose Meera Thangarajah with such a pregnancy. After enduring an ovarian pregnancy, the happy family welcomed a daughter into their family. The couple named their baby girl Durga, which means Goddess.

Planning Family Vacations with Toddlers

weee.jpgvacation1.gif vacation.gif

vacation.gifPlanning family vacations can be difficult enough, but when you’re planning family vacations with toddlers, who need routine and familiarity, finding hotel rooms with amenities you need and knowing what to pack (and what not to pack) can be big challenges. These tips for planning family vacations with toddlers should help you choose hotel rooms where you will feel as at-home as possible and pack the equipment your toddler needs for a family vacation that’s fun, not frustrating.

Choose Family-Friendly Hotel Rooms

Chill with a refrigerator. While you certainly can survive without them, a refrigerator, microwave and extra sink in your hotel room can make family vacations with toddlers easier. Refrigerators keep milk (or juice or string cheese) chilled. Microwaves warm up toddler veggies or leftover slices of the pizza you ate in your room the night before because your toddler’s bedtime precluded dinner in a restaurant. And an extra sink outside the bathroom gives you a place without a toilet view to wash sippy cups. (Tip: Pack a travel-sized bottle of dishwashing detergent.)

Book a suite. When planning family vacations with toddlers, look for hotels with “Suites” in the name. While an actual suite with doors that separate two or more rooms is ideal, “mini-suites,” which is what I call hotel rooms that offer a little more space than standard rooms as well as some kind of divider, work too. The idea is to have a space where your toddler can sleep undisturbed so the whole family doesn’t have to make 8 p.m. their bedtime. When planning family vacations with toddlers in tow, you can often find mini-suites at rates not much higher than what you’d pay for regular rooms. (Tip: Pack a few electrical outlet covers and a cabinet lock or two for use in your room.)

Kids Still Read the Classic Books

 kids1.bmp

From Green Eggs and Ham to To Kill a Mockingbird, kids seem to pick the classics when it’s time to read, according to a study of 78.5 million books read by more than 3 million children nationwide.

Dr. Seuss’s book was the most popular choice among first graders, Renaissance Learning found. The company, which looked at kids in 9,800 schools for the study, manages a program in which students take computerized reading comprehension quizzes. Students earn points based on the book’s word difficulty, word length, sentence length, and total number of words. Many schools even award prizes to students for their efforts in the program.

Some teachers were pleased with the popularity of To Kill a Mockingbird, which topped the list for ninth-through-12th graders. Others say the book owes much of its success to the fact that teachers make it a requirement. (The report doesn’t distinguish between books that were assigned and those students chose.

Paltrow: My kids don’t know I’m an actress

gwyneth.jpg

NEW YORK, May 2 (UPI) — She may be one of the world’s most famous women, but U.S. actress Gwyneth Paltrow says she doesn’t think her two small children are aware of what her job is.Asked what her daughter Apple and son Moses think about mommy playing an action hero in “Iron Man,” Paltrow told UPI: “They have no idea what I do. I don’t think they have a clue. I’m not an action hero, I’m just a secretary.”In the blockbuster-to-be, Paltrow plays Pepper Potts, resourceful assistant to Tony Stark, aka Iron Man.Paltrow, who has made a career in grown-up movies like “Shakespeare in Love,” “Emma” and “Possession,” said “Iron Man” isn’t more on her kids’ radar because it is a superhero flick.

“They’re only 3 and 2, not really. No,” she said.

Director Jon Favreau told UPI he thinks many people will check out “Iron Man” because of its cast.

Although Paltrow and her co-star Robert Downey Jr. are not normally associated with big box-office hits, Favreau noted, “They are people everyone is very interested in.”

“Literally, we would go to the London premiere and the shoes (Paltrow) wore would be on the front page of every London paper and (on) every Internet blog,” he said.

Too Much Emphasis on the Appearance of Postpartum Moms?

halle.jpg

It used to be that new mamas debuted their babies after delivery, not their hot postpartum bods.

But, keeping up with Hollywood’s trend of mums bouncing back right after babe, Halle Berry unveiled the fruits of her gym labors at Silver Rose Gala and Auction in LA on Sunday.

While there’s no denying the actress looks amazing after having daughter, Nahla six weeks ago, our friends at Celebrity Baby Scoop have a shot of her looking just as stunning, but less svelte while shopping yesterday.

Do you think the hoopla of Halle’s postpartum perfection sets a ridiculous bar for other child bearing women?

Eating out with Toddlers: Tips for Family Fine Dining

eating.bmp

 By Ericka Lutz

Eating out with toddlers doesn’t have to be a nightmare. Try these great tips to make your restaurant experiences more palatable.

OK, let’s get it straight: having kids doesn’t mean your life is over or that you have to sacrifice your social life. I’m passionate about this belief, especially when it comes to eating out, an activity our family long ago elevated to high hobby. I want my daughter to appreciate fine food and good dining as much as I do, so from the time she was born we’ve been hauling her to restaurants—and having a good time, too.

Granted, we’re unusual. If you’re like most parents, it’s been a long time since you ventured beyond the neighborhood pizza parlor with little ones. Remember those long ago days before kids when you used to go to real restaurants? Not McHotDog Queen. Not that faux Italian place in the mall with the floor sticky from spilled soda where they pass out free earplugs at the door to drown out the endless beeps and crashes of the video arcade. I’m talking about places with tablecloths and wait staff, not announcements over the loud speaker (”Number 12, your dinner is ready … number 12, please!”).

I know. Next month is your anniversary, and you plan to get a babysitter and go out. Until then … Until then …? That’s no way to live! While going out to eat with babies and toddlers can be a challenge, it isn’t impossible, foolhardy, or insane. It’s usually enjoyable. It does take a little practice but it’s worth it.

Here, then, is a quick hit version of everything I know about restauranteering with the under-five set. [Read more →]
